Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing and inventor of the pie chart (no less), was sent to the Crimea on this day in 1854 where her hospital practices duing the Crimean War saved many lives and became hugely influential. Celebrate her medical and social achievements at the Florence Nightingale Museum at St Thomas's Hospital, opposite the Houses of Parliament. (Nearest tube: Waterloo)
